Facing greater health challenges and costs, today’s
Baby Boomers
are making smarter choices:
Living at home with independence, safety and peace of mind.
Will you?

From: Rosemarie Rossetti, Ph.D.
Columbus Ohio
Dear Friend,
Baby Boomers are experiencing a revolution. They’re thinking about retirement and the next stages of life in different ways than past generations.
Aren’t you?
You’re living longer – and better. You’re more actively engaged in life. And you don’t want to give up your freedom as you age.
Consequently you have greater expectations about “home” than any generation before.
For you, home should provide comfort, independence, accessibility, safety and peace of mind – despite disabilities, limitations and health challenges.
That means staying in your home for as long as possible … and avoiding the move to assisted living or nursing facilities.
This growing awareness isn’t restricted only to aging. It applies, as well, to people with:
Sudden Health Changes
- Accidents
- Stroke
- Spinal cord injury
Degenerative conditions
- Arthritis
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
- Dementia
- Muscular dystrophy
- Multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Parkinson's disease
Little wonder so many “Boomers” are choosing to live in a sustainable home that provides:
- Exceptional safety features
- Ease and functionality
- High levels of independence
- Accessibility and comfort
- Frustration-free use of bathrooms, kitchens, appliances, cabinets, closets
- Multi-generational living space
- Design adaptability
Times are changing. So are your criteria for meeting your changing needs. You and your friends have …
Children no longer living at home
Reduced ability or interest in maintaining your home
Health and fitness challenges to attend to
Interests outside the home to pursue
This is a page section
Instead of downsizing, you’re more focused on
“rightsizing!”
Rightsizing recognizes the hard choices you are facing in the months and years ahead. These may include:
- Sudden changes in your living circumstances due to a health crisis, accident or injury
- Weighing the advantages of remodeling vs. moving to a new community or retirement facility
- Taking care of your own parents at home to support them for health or financial reasons
- Your adult children, and maybe grandchildren, moving back with you bringing the demands of multi-generational living
Compounding these demands is your need to conserve your retirement dollars by living more affordably – and sustainably.
In fact, by delaying entry into an assisted living facility you can save from $50,000 to $100,000 per year -- or more!
All this accelerates the importance of …
Finding a home that provides the right features and products so you can live in place … with ease and grace!
How can you identify a home that best supports your needs?
By understanding and adapting the principles of Universal Design.
Universal Design is about accommodating people of all sizes, ages, and abilities. A home featuring universal design principles makes life remarkably easier not only for those with mobility issues -- but for the young, old, short or tall, as well.
With a disabled population that’s steadily growing, and a shortage of housing to accommodate us as we age, the need for Universal Design solutions has increased dramatically.
That’s why we created the
Universal Design Toolkit.
What is the Universal Design Toolkit?

The A-to-Z ultimate guide for you if you’re looking to buy, rent, remodel or build a home to accommodate you or other loved ones facing the challenges of aging or living with disabilities.
The Universal Design Toolkit is new … unique … and is the only resource of its kind.
I know because I wrote it.
Along with my husband Mark Leder we built the world’s first and only Universal Design Living Laboratory.

The Universal Design Living Laboratory
The UDLL is not a laboratory at all. It’s an actual home – in fact it’s our home – and it incorporates all the features, accessibility, convenience and long-life benefits all of us desire and expect from a sustainable home.
Located in Columbus, OH, our Universal Design Living Laboratory is a national demonstration home and garden. It’s the top rated universal design home in North America ... has earned 3 Universal Design Certifications … and has been toured by over 2,300 people.

The Universal Design Living Laboratory Story
The UDLL story is my story – a very personal story. I share it with you as a warning about how fragile – and transformative – life can be.
Close to twenty years ago, on a sunny afternoon bicycle ride, a 3½-ton tree came crashing down on me. My life was changed in that instant! I was paralyzed from the waist down with a spinal cord injury. I have used a wheelchair ever since.
During my extensive rehabilitation I was determined to get my life back. I wanted a full recovery – without pain – to do things for myself again. I was determined to regain the most basic life skills: feeding myself, grooming, moving in bed, sitting up, pushing myself in a wheelchair.
But when I returned home from the hospital I was in for a dramatic awakening.
No longer could I access …
- Fifty percent of my home, which was now inaccessible.
- The second floor or basement due to stairs.
- Many rooms because the doorways were too narrow.
- The back door and steps to my backyard garden.
- Kitchen wall cabinets – or get myself a glass of water.
- Closets because the entries were too narrow.
- Clothing rods and shelves in the closet.
- Hallways that were too narrow to turn in.
- The bathroom toileting area because I couldn’t get in.
- Bathroom privacy when the door was removed.
- My bathtub.
- Towel bars that were out of reach.
And that was just a sampling …
I struggled to be independent again – to do things for myself. Everywhere I turned there were frustrating barriers, obstacles and limitations.
I was handicapped by a spinal cord injury … and now my home intensified my disability.
For five years after the injury we adapted, renovated and transformed our home to accommodate the frustrations of my new realty. It didn’t work.
We finally realized that the home we loved, and built just three years before my injury, would never fully meet my need for independence, mobility, safety, comfort and convenience.
Our dream home had turned into a nightmare! It would require drastic reconfigurations -- almost a complete rebuild. The expense would not be worth the investment.
We knew we had to find another alternative. And after extensive research, travel and investigation we discovered the life-supporting benefits of Universal Design.
Statistics show most of us are living longer and the median age is increasing. In fact, 25% of the population will be 65 or older in just 4 years.
Many, like you, may be looking to move – but not to assisted living!
Instead, you’re looking to rightsize, remodel or find a new step-free, hazard-free environment. You want to live with ease-of-use, convenience, accessibility, and independence at home – regardless of your age or ability.
Why is the Universal Design Toolkit so valuable for you?
Because there’s nothing else like it anywhere. This comprehensive resource offers everything you need to know – including new, hard to find, and little-known information – as well as guides, checklists, videos, answers, sources and more – in an easy to access format.
Having once been able-bodied and then suddenly disabled – I bring a personal perspective to the world of Universal Design. I was dramatically affected by the limitations imposed upon me and I don’t want that happening to you!
My goal: to eliminate the costly trial and error challenges you’d inevitably encounter if faced with this learning curve on your own.
Consequently, we put more than 10 years of research into the Universal Design Toolkit.
Its nearly 200 richly illustrated pages are filled with:
- Insights that distinguish essential products, services and resources from the unnecessary.
- Proven, realistic tips for finding the right home.
- Home features you need to look for. Nothing is assumed or left out.
- Photographs that provide a frame of reference to inspire, clarify and illuminate features and benefits.
Pictured items are for illustration only. The Toolkit is a downloadable PDF - the videos are viewable online.
- Valuable resources to save you time, money and energy.
- Handy home checklists and assessments.
- Interview questions to help you hire contractors with knowledge and experience.
- Helpful sources of funding.
- Space planning dimensions for access using assistive devices such as wheelchairs and walkers.
- And so much more!

“If you are looking for that one book that explains this important but often misunderstood subject, this is it."
“Rosemarie Rossetti’s new book provides an immensely valuable guide and toolkit for anyone interested in applying Universal Design principles within their own homes—new or remodeled. For years, I’ve been looking for a tool like this one, that is not all just rules and dimensions, but that actually gives a view into the way that Universal Design can change lives, making the home a friend that supports life, as it is supposed to be, rather than an obstacle to living fully. Through her own story of suddenly changed mobility, she describes the search for solutions and the dramatic and truly stellar result of her efforts. She eloquently shares that journey, and the expertise that she’s garnered along the way—an expertise now accessible to all.
Rosemarie’s life challenge has become that kind of lens that brings real understanding to the world of Universal Design. I will be using this book and toolkit for many years to come, as I hope you will also. If you are looking for that one book that explains this important but often misunderstood subject, this is it.”
